投稿標題(英): Cost-effectiveness of Implementing Vacutainer System on Reducing Needlestick Injuries Among Nurses

投稿摘要: Needlestick injuries are usually associated with the drawing of blood samples among nurses and may be effectively prevented by the use of one of safety-engineered equipment, the Vacutainer system. This study investigated the impact of the implementation of the Vacutainer system on the incidence of needlestick injury among nurses and cost-effectiveness at a medical center in southern Taiwan. This was a comparative study with before-and-after intervention evaluation. There were 64 needlestick injuries among nurses between 2007 and 2010. The costs of the Vacutainer system and medical costs with managing needlestick injuries increased NT 581,222 dollars during the intervention period. After adjusting 1,000 patient-day, the direct cost increased NT 3,934 dollars per needlestick injury in the units using the Vacutainer system among nurses. This study provided the cost-effectiveness evidence to promote the use of safety Vacutainer system among nurses in southern Taiwan.
