投稿標題(英): Improving the Rate of Accuracy of Wearing Protective Equipment by the Staff Workers in Medical Supply Centers in Taiwan

投稿摘要: The Supply Center is a primary unit that provides various sterile and replacement items (supplies) for all departments in the hospital. If infection control protocols within the center are not well implemented, nosocomial infections can occur. Therefore, infection control is tied to the Supply Center.

The benchmark for infection control of the hospital accreditation mandates that sanitized and contaminated areas of the Supply Center should be clearly labeled and separated. The reason for doing so is to avoid the staff workers transpassing
the two areas, so cross-area contamination rate can be drastically reduced. Staff workers are also required to wear appropriate protective gears while performing their tasks.

Our team monitored the workers at the Supply Center to see if such protocol had been followed. All workers should wear protective gears, including surgical caps, waterproof clothing, gowns, gloves, masks and protective masks. 85.6% of them met the requirement, however, the accuracy rate was only 80.5%. Reasons for such a difference were “Too busy to wear protective equipment,” “lack of knowledge for the importance of wearing the protective gears,” and “protective equipment was inaccessible.” The following recommendations were made:

1. Held training programs to emphasize the importance of wearing protective equipment, especially in the contaminated areas.
2. Protective equipment should be available in the dressing room, so it is convenient and accessible to the staff workers.
3. Made signs and posters to friendly remind the workers to wear protective equipment before entering the contaminated areas.
4. Performed unscheduled monthly audits.

After improvements were made, 98.7% of the workers wore protective equipment, up from 84.6%, and the accuracy rate reached 99.1%, from 80.5%. The Supply Center staff became more aware of self-regulative measures that can greatly minimize their occupational risk.
