Effectiveness of bundle care to decrease central line associated bloodstream infection

Bloodstream infection (BSI) is one of the serious healthcare associated infections resulting in high mortalities and costs. Our hospital has implemented bundle care in the ICUs with special focus on BSI prevention. We retrospective evaluated its efficacy on decreasing BSI during implementation of bundle care. We implemented a 5 item-BSI care bundle modified from that of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) at eight MICUs at our hospital. A multidisciplinary teamwork was involved in this bundle care. This study analyses the MICU central line utilization and BSI density between Jan 2011 and June 2013 to assess the BSI bundle impact in a clinical setting. Totally 9,987 MICU patients were analyzed. The compliance rate of healthcare workers to 5-elements were 95.5%. CABSI were decreased from 11.4‰ in 2011 to 9.2‰ in 2013. The CRBSI were decreased from 1.72‰ in 2011 to 0.74‰ in 2013. The utilization of central lines were decreased from 53.5% in 2011 to 48.7% in 2013.
