投稿標題(英): Seasonal variation in incidence of Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia in southern Taiwan

投稿摘要: Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause of community-acquired pneumonia in developed countries. Seasonal variation of pneumococcal pneumonia is vitally important information for policy planning or clinicians who deal with these diseases. We conducted a retrospective study of Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia in southern Taiwan over 11-year period. Patients admitted due to pneumococcal pneumonia during 2002- 2012 were included. Totally, there were 304 pneumococcal cases, 24 of them complicated with pneumococcal bacteremia. The incidence of Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia is correlated to the temperature change of season alternation. 34% and 22 % of the cases occurred in the winter and spring. In contrast, only 19.7 % cases occurred in the summer. Furthermore, 50 percent cases occurred during 2004 to 2006. Seasonal variation in incidence of pneumococcal pneumonia in southern Taiwan may provide valuable information in determining the important duration of disease and policy formulation.
