投稿標題(英): Investigation and Management of a Clustering of Multiple drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Colonizations/Infections at a Chest Medicine Ward

投稿摘要: A surge of MDRAB was detected in a chest medicine ward in Nov 2012-Dec 2012. CRAB was isolated in 4 patients (1 UTI and 3 colonizations). Environmental surveillance and hand cultures were conducted in this ward. We followed the standardized culture methods for enumeration and susceptibility testing of isolates. Molecular subtyping was used to determine the source of infection. All samples from environmental (n=133) and healthcare workers’ hands (n=26) were negative for CRAB. On further investigation, we found that foreign laborer caretakers failed to understand and comply with the protective isolation procedures due to the language barrier. Interventions included multi-lingual educational posters and materials for foreign workers. An MDRAB active screening program was initiated consisting of isolation of new inpatients on admission until screening cultures were negative. These interventions successfully curtailed the spread of MDRAB.
