Elizabethkingia Meningoseptica Outbreak Investigation and Handling in A Southern Regional Hospital Baby Room

Four cases of neonatal meningitis occurred in Baby Room of a regional hospital from 2011 to 2012. Elizabethkingia meningoseptica (E.M.) was collected form blood and CSF. Tracing back to 2005, no neonates in that ward had E.M. infection, so it was an unexpected outbreak. Specimens collected from hands, bottles, bubble milk, warm milk and bath appliances, sinks, faucets and other hospital tap water. There were 248 samples were collected from the environment and health care workers. The warm milk water, bottle brush, wash basin were positive for E.M.. Infection control measures were instituted immediately, including following: 1. Environment and equipment disinfect once a day. 2. Every newborn after bath with hot tub and sterilization bottle, bottle brush must change regularly. 3. Maternal breast milk sent to the baby room must be inverted to a clean bottle before being putting into the milk pot to warm milk. No more case was found by far this outbreak has been effectively controlled.
