The state and analysis of herpes zoster-infected patients in a hospital

VZV (varicella zoster virus) only affects humans and causes chickenpox in children, teens and young adults and herpes zoster (shingles) in adults and elderly. VZV infects the nerves and causes a wide variety of symptoms. After the primary infection (chickenpox), the virus goes dormant in the nerves, including the cranial nerve ganglia, dorsal root ganglia, and autonomic ganglia. Many years later, VZV can reactivate to cause a number of neurologic conditions, as PHN (post-herpetic neuralgia).
The patients with shingles from Inpatient- and Outpatient- Department (IPD/OPD) were increasing during Jul-Aug, 2015. From the ICD-9 data of our hospital cohort, we want to collect and analyze the state and risk factors of these patients since Jan, 2014. Between Jan, 2014 and Aug, 2015, there were 774,346 patients visiting OPD and 272,235 patient-days admitting in the hospital. At the same period, there were 200 patients and 846 patient-days enrolled in our cohort and the prevalence rates were 275 and 233 per million visiting in 2014 and 2015.
The toddlers whom were received vaccinated totally after they are 12 month-old since 2004. According to the experience from <Population-based study of HZ in Korea, 2014>, we want to establish our data for clinical practice. So we collect the data of age, gender, month, right or left side, site of infection (head / neck / trunk / extremity) and underlying co-morbidity. The visiting Divisions of IPD or OPD and present or absent of PHN were also recorded.

Key words: herpes zoster, varicella zoster virus, shingles, post-herpetic neuralgia
