Improving the Performance of Environmental Infection Control Investigation in Hospital by Healthcare-associated Information System

Background
The purpose of regular environmental monitoring in hospital is to promptly identify potential risks, preventing outbreaks of healthcare-associated infections. But, the limitations of paper-based infection control surveillance included risk of data loss, difficulties in data integration and analysis and lack of real-time monitoring. We would share our experiences and strategies about our healthcare-associated information system to improve the effectiveness of interventions in the regional hospital in 2025.

Methods & Materials
The information system was established through the interdepartmental collaboration between the Division of Quality Management and the Division of Laboratory Medicine in our hospital Our system encompasses nine major categories of surveillance include sterile instruments, microbial fallout, in-house food, RO water, high-level disinfection medical device testing, and so on. The environmental monitoring items must be identified and received following the same procedures as patient specimens, and the reports are issued within the system. Furthermore, the alert notification in system could utilize instant messaging software Teamplus to promptly deliver test results to the person in charge.

Results
The system had issued a total of 24 abnormal real-time alerts, accounting for 0.6% of all RO water cases in 2025. The hemodialysis center were notified immediately to enable timely intervention and prevented potential healthcare-associated infections following test results do not meet the acceptable standards. Moreover, the infection control nurses and clinical staff could discover and prevent the items such as sterile instruments not executed as scheduled by the built-in scheduling function. Therefore, all clinical units have maintained full compliance (100%) with scheduled environmental monitoring requirements

Conclusions
In summary, this information system represents a significant milestone in the digital transformation of environmental infection control in our hospital. Our system could reduce the need for manual management, provide real-time alerts for timely intervention, and issue reminders for applicant to submit samples for inspection. We should continue to optimize and expand the function of system in the future.
